Looking for something to be on in the background while I worked, I put on Army of Darkness. I first saw this in the theater back in 1993, bought the VHS tape as soon as it was available, and watched it endlessly.
One day while browsing in a book store, back when I was in the Navy. I think I was overseas at the time, Hong Kong possibly, I read in a movie book that there was an alternate ending, available in Europe. A friend of mine was going to England for a two week vacation. I gave him a hundred dollars to cover any expenses and told him to get me a copy of the movie while he was there. He came through for me finding a PAL format copy of the movie and brought it back. It was in a clamshell case and, of course, not playable on the VCRs I had access to. I called around to every video store I could find in Hawaii, trying to find someplace that would convert it for me. I went to various indy movie houses. Honolulu had a lot of them for some reason. I was always going to these really tiny theaters and watching old movies. Anyway, I finally found a place that would copy it to a VHS tape. That cost me another hundred dollars. I took the newly copied tape back to the ship and watched the European cut of the film with the original ending. All total, it was about five minutes of new film. Worth every penny.
